Miss Universe Malaysia 2013 Carey Ng on balancing life and career

It's always hard balancing a busy career and a relationship, but local couple-of-the-moment Carey Ng and Roen Cian seem to have created the right mix.

We caught up with them while they were doing this shoot in conjunction with the Time Kulture exhibition currently running at Pavilion KL till Aug 9.

Fresh off an annual vacation with Cian’s family at Krabi, Ng, the former Miss Universe 2013 and currently the national director of Miss Universe Malaysia, said that it was her first time on holiday with his family.

For those who don’t know, the pair met while Ng was involved in the bikini competition for the Miss Universe 2013 pageant held at one of Cian’s F&B establishments - The Pool.

“She has an interesting look and I found her quite striking and stunning,” revealed Cian about his beau adding, “It was also easy as our families know each other and we move around in similar social circles.”

Cian is an entrepreneur and director of The Group KL, and says a typical date is really simple where they go online and search for popular places to eat and most of the time, it is a tepi jalan type eaterie where a baseball hat is the accessory for the evening:

“Finding time for things that are worth finding time for comes easy no?”

Ng reveals that Cian has the tendency to do everything with full force or not at all. She also humourously adds that he is quite fussy and critical with regard to food (comes with the F&B territory) and that he doesn’t like cheese.

Apparently, for this couple, food is definitely the way to a mans heart, as Cian shares that Ng is a very good cook.

They both agree that it is all about balance especially when finding the middle ground between their public lives, their own families and each other.

“It is a conscious effort when managing time and prioritising the important things is key. It’s not difficult when coming home and getting comfortable is great too,” says Ng.

When it comes to work, Ng says she enjoys what she’s doing (she’s also an emcee) : “It changes all the time and is always exciting as I encounter various personalities in the industry everyday. Sometimes it is a day filled with an abundance of opportunities and other times, it is frightening with risk and uncertainty. That said, I always have stories to tell.”

When she’s not making public appearances, she’s more often found watching a movie or documentary, or doing more something active.

For Cian, work is something of an adventure as he says he never knows how the day will end: “It’s fun filled with like minded people and often does not seem like work. My days are tiring but rewarding.”

Besides the usual football, gym and cycling, he also unwinds by discovering new music and acts and brainstorming with the team on fresh ideas.

Having done several photoshoots individually, they say that this is their second one together and although it is hard being romantic in public, their relationship on the social media platform has been a fruitful one.

“It has been good for us so far. A lot of people don’t realise that our days are very routine and habitual and that we enjoy very simple things. Despite that, together, our fan base has grown. We definitely get a lot of perks as a couple. I am an ambassador of Adidas and she’s an ambassador for Reebok and even though we pose together in a picture, we just speak about our own brands. It works,” said Cian.

When it comes to future plans, Ng would like to continue being happy while surrounded by loved ones. For Cian, he’s looking forward to working together more with Ng, who also holds a degree in architecture, and to add to the swoon couple romance factor – marriage with two kids.
