Hoodie Allen's People Keep Talking.

Perhaps as way to appeal to a wider audience, Hoodie Allen’s (real name Steven Adam Markowitz) decided to showcase romantic number Show Me What You’re Made Of as the first single from People Keep Talking.

With a laid-back beat, Allen raps about meeting a potential lover with somewhat cheeky lyrics like “Baby let me turn you on/Treat you like a new iPhone”. If you’ve used an iPhone before, then you know things will start to go south once the battery life shows its "true potential".

Then again, you might find Allen's carefree lyrical stylings somewhat humorous. He shows off his romantic side again on Movie, a fun track with an unforgettable sexy trumpet hook. Here he tells the ladies: “I’m tryna keep it romantic, I’m like Matthew McConaugh/Don’t need to be a detective to figure out that she want it”.

I find that Allen is more appealing when he raps about his struggles to make it as a hip-hop artist.

100 Percent Something opens with slow piano keys reminiscent which reminds me of Frank Ocean-style music. Here, he sheds his loverboy image then goes off telling haters that he is making money in his sleep and has no time for negativity.

In the brilliant fast-paced People Keep Talking, he tells listeners about difficult record executives putting him down via phone calls.

In the sassy hook, Allen will tell you that he’s going to be just fine. All About It featuring Ed Sheeran is another standout track that you’d want to keep listening on repeat.

People Keep Talking is a solid debut album. Here’s hoping more listeners get to see the other side of Allen, an artist struggling for acceptance in the heavily-guarded hip-hop world.
