Artist : George Ezra
Genre : Indie, Folk, Pop
There are 16 tracks on British singer-songwriter’s George Ezra mammoth debut studio album. Did You Hear The Rain? is an imposing four-minute cut that kicks off with Ezra’s baritone voice asking “Why do you treat me so bad”.
He then takes on a menacing turn as he sings “Oh, Lucifer’s insider/ Oh, did I send a shiver down your spine”. Drawing Board is another dark offering where he sings about a philandering lover. Ezra goes into storytelling mode here, describing how he has a plan to book a scuba holiday even though he knew that she couldn’t swim.
He also recommended a Mr (Sweeney) Todd for his cheating paramour to get a haircut. Ezra hides his sarcastic heartache well underneath this upbeat track. On Leaving It Up To You, he gives a nod to a “half-wit boyfriend” who interrupted his time with a dear friend.
Yes, Ezra is very descriptive. But it’s not all depressing stuff here. Budapest is a carefree song that will get you singing along and thinking about a getaway in no time.
Overall, Ezra’s debut album has enough witty charm and depth to keep you listening over and over again.
