Coming in second isn’t something many aspire to. And as if being a sequel to the 2011 sleeper hit The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel wasn’t challenging enough, this film comes saddled with the clunky and somewhat ignominous moniker of The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.
And as enjoyable as it is – for who doesn’t want to spend a few hours watching Maggie Smith, Judi Dench and Bill Nighy trading witticisms while Richard Gere strolls dreamily around? – it is never more than second best.
