China, Kenya strengthen cultural ties through film, television cooperation

NAIROBI, June 8 (Xinhua) -- A delegation from China's central Hunan Province on Monday visited the University of Nairobi to explore cooperation in film and television production, highlighting growing cultural exchanges between China and Kenya.

The visit was part of the Hunan Film Week Africa (Kenya) and aimed to promote dialogue, as well as the sharing of knowledge and experience, among senior officials, scholars and industry experts on future avenues for collaboration in the creative economy.

Luo Zhengmao, deputy director of the Information Office of the People's Government of Hunan Province, said the performing arts, particularly film and television, are at the center of cooperation between Hunan and Kenya, with the goal of achieving mutually beneficial outcomes.

"Together, we will explore how streaming services, social media and short-video platforms can create new opportunities for co-productions, copyright cooperation and innovative content distribution between Hunan and African creators, especially young filmmakers," Luo said.

Jack Odhiambo, dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Nairobi, said cooperation with Hunan Province has provided a platform for mentoring and upskilling emerging television and film producers.

He noted that the partnership also led to the successful launch of the first season of the musical talent show "Sing for Africa" in late 2025. The program seeks to identify, nurture and promote young local singers while strengthening cultural exchanges between China and Africa, he said.

The University of Nairobi is keen to deepen its partnership with Hunan Province in innovation and capacity building for filmmakers, television producers and performing artists, Odhiambo added.
