The Toy Box is an occasional online exclusive column where we take a look at the latest in toys and collectibles out there.

From one of the most highly-anticipated Lego sets this year to some beautiful pewter works by Royal Selangor, this edition of The Toy Box is a bit of a mixed bag.

Lego Star Trek

For many fans of science fiction and pop culture, one of THE top franchises has to be Star Trek. Since it made its debut back in 1966, it has proven to be one of the most enduring sci-fi franchises of all time, spawning numerous movies, TV series, games, and of course, toys and merchandise.

Perhaps the only merchandise it has lacked in its almost six decade-long existence is an official playset from that most iconic of brick toys, Lego.

Well, that's about to change, as Lego has just announced what is one of the most hotly anticipated playsets in its history – the iconic USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D, from the Star Trek: The Next Generation series.

This 3600 piece measures over 27cm high, 60cm long and 48 cm wide, and has a "detachable command saucer, a secondary hull, warp nacelles with distinctive red and blue detailing, an opening shuttlebay, two mini shuttlepods and an angled display stand with a schematic and ship statistics", according to a press release.

What would be a playset without minifigures, right? The set come with nine minifugures – Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Commander William Riker, Lieutenant Worf, Lieutenant Commander Data, Dr. Beverly Crusher, Lieutenant Commander La Forge, Counselor Deanna Troi, Wesley Crushe, and even Whoopi Goldberg's Bartender Guinan.

Of course, a set this big doesn't come cheap – the set will be retailing at US$399.99 (RM1,670.96), which makes it on par with many of Lego's biggest and most sought after sets. All the same, I doubt it'll be enough to deter fans from saying, "make it so!".

Royal Selangor superheroes

While we're on the subject of ultra-premium collectibles, Royal Selangor has just released two superhero items as part of its Autumn/Winter 2025 collection.

The first is an impressive Superman bust that is modelled in the distinctive style of legendary comic artist Jim Lee.

Limited to only 300 individually numbered pieces worldwide, this collectible celebrates one of DC’s most enduring icons through a bold comic-inspired design.

The bust features a satin pewter finish for the face, stained detailing on the hair, a tinted clear blue suit, and hand-painted 'S' emblems and cape. The base draws inspiration from comic cover art featuring Superman standing before the Art Deco-style Daily Planet building in Metropolis.

If Marvel is more your thing, then check out the new Spider-Man vs. The Sinister Six Plaque, featuring the Web-Crawler suspended upside down in classic Spidey fashion, surrounded by his most notorious foes from The Sinister Six.

Framed in wood, the plaque plays with depth and detail, with Spider-Man’s sculpted form seeming to leap forward while the villains remain ghostly and distorted, echoing the constant tension he faces.

Both these pieces are part of Royal Selangor’s 2025 Autumn/Winter line and is available at Royal Selangor stores, authorised dealers and online at royalselangor.com.

Mattel and Hasbro to get it done, done done

If you're a fan of Kpop Demon Hunters and have always wanted a Rumi or Jinu doll to play with, or a Derpy plushie to hug to sleep, then rejoice, as both Mattel and Hasbro have inked a deal with Netflix to release toys and merchandise based on the hit movie.

According to a report by Bloomberg last month, the first products from the collaboration will be released in 2026.

In a press statement, Marian Lee, Netflix’s chief marketing officer, said: "Netflix, Mattel and Hasbro joining forces on this first-of-its-kind collaboration means fans can finally get their hands on the best dolls, games, and merchandise they’ve been not-so-subtly demanding on every social platform known to humanity."
