Lifts and escalators are not safe for dogs

People enjoy the benefits of lifts and elevators in shops, train stations, office buildings and airports but they are dangerous for dogs.

Many dog owners are unaware that these everyday conveniences can seriously harm their pets.

"Escalators and lifts regularly cause emergencies for us," says veterinarian Tina Hölscher from Aktion Tier, a German animal welfare organization.

Dogs' claws can be injured during an escalator ride if they get caught or torn off which can lead to severe pain and heavy bleeding, and the healing process can take time.

Your dog's paw will only be fully functional again once the claw horn has partially regrown.

A ride in a frequently used lift can even be life-threatening, if only the human or only the dog manages to enter the lift before the door closes. The partner at the other end of the lead is then left outside. If the lift starts moving, your dog's lead and collar tighten, which can have deadly consequences.

Use the stairs instead, Hölscher recommends. If you cannot, keep your dog on a short lead. You can of course carry small dogs for short distances.

Before setting off for the shops, as an owner, ask yourself, "Does my dog really need to come along too?" After all, busy shopping centres mainly mean stress for dogs. – dpa
