Common usage vs consistency

ISN’T it wrong to translate “Portuguese” to “orang Portugis” in Malay? Why can’t we just call them “orang Portugal”? If we meet a Chinese person, we call him/her “orang Cina”, not “orang Cainis”. The same goes with Japanese (“orang Jepun,” not “orang Japanis”) and Javanese (“orang Jawa,” not “orang Javanis”).

The only exception that we have is when we translate “English” to “orang Inggeris” because it would sound awkward to call them “orang England.” – Muhammad Nasir Mustafa
