ITEM: It’s National Pencil Day on March 30. A pencil is the first tool we use to learn to write and draw. What are your favourite pencils? Draw us a picture of your favourite pencils and share what’s interesting about them. Please do not write your story on the same sheet of paper as your drawing.

E-mail your contributions to lifestyle@thestar.com.my by March 25. Please put “STARCHILD: Pencils” in the subject line of your e-mail. Scanned drawings should be in jpeg format, with a resolution of 200 dpi.

“February is my favourite month because my family and I will have double celebrations. My sister Hailey’s birthday is in February. Chinese New Year falls on this month too,” says Mandy Tang, five.

“I like November because its my birthday month. I usually receive many presents on my birthday,” writes Moses Liew Kah Yao, six.

“Do you know why I like April? It’s my birthday month and also, because of April Fools’ Day. This is when I can go to the mall to shop and dine with my parents. I can also play tricks on my friends on April Fools’ Day. My wish for my favourite month is to be able to go out every weekend without worrying too much about the pandemic,” says Feivul Lee, eight.

Victoria Liew Yen Yi, 10, writes:”My favourite month of the year is December because it’s Winter Solstice, my birthday and Christmas. I love to make colourful rice balls during the Winter Solstice festival.”

Eight-year-old Hayley Liew Xin Yi likes February because Chinese New Year falls on the second month of the year. “I am happy because my family gets together for reunion dinner. I enjoy playing fire crackers, and receiving red ang pao packets.”

“January is my favourite month. It’s special because my father’s birthday and mine falls on this month. We share the same birthday,” says Bethany Wang Qi Syuen, seven.

Younger sibling Asher Wang Qi Chuen, four, writes: “I like December because it’s the year-end holidays and a time to celebrate Christmas. I can decorate the Christmas tree, help Mum wrap gifts and receive gifts. It’s a joyous month.”

Suvethika Mathyarasan, 11, loves November because her birthday falls on Nov 19. “My parents will decorate our home with balloons and ribbons and they will buy me my favourite chocolate cake. I can’t wait to celebrate my birthday!”

“My favourite month is December because it is my birthday month. My birthday falls on Dec 23, close to Christmas Day. So I get to celebrate my birthday and Christmas too, says Clarisse Choo Kai Xin, nine.

Jodie Tan Li Juen, 12, writes, “Christmas songs, giving and receiving Christmas presents and a lot of food make December my favourite month of the year. December is also an exciting time to countdown for the New Year.”

Younger sibling Jayden Tan Li Sheng, nine, likes December too. “I love seeing Christmas lights and ornaments on Christmas trees. I love listening to carols too. And I like getting ready for the holidays and spending time with the family.”

“I like December because it’s the long school holidays and get to spend extra time with my parents. Also, December is extra special because I will receive gifts on Christmas Day,” says Chuah Seng Koon, six.
