Macao-born singer Maria Cordero has revealed that she is already planning for her later years, saying she does not want to become a burden on her six children as she grows older.

In an interview with Hong Kong media, the 72-year-old said she is already looking into nursing homes.

“After recently visiting a friend who suffers from dementia, I felt that I needed to make plans for the future,” she said.

Cordero, who is based in Hong Kong, added that she had previously told her family she would look for a good nursing home when she gets older.

Although her son questioned her decision, the singer remained firm, saying: “You have to make preparations for yourself … Actually, I’m already looking into nursing homes.”

Cordero also revealed that she and her good friend, Hong Kong artiste Li Hai Ha, have made plans for their retirement.

The two plan to pool their money to hire a driver and a domestic helper to assist with their daily needs.

“In our spare time, we could go around eating, drinking, having fun and just enjoy a carefree retirement life,” she said.

Since launching her showbiz career in 1985, Cordero has released songs including Sai Hei and You Can’t Stop Me Loving You, and appeared in films such as Knock Off (1998) and From Vegas To Macau (2014).

She has six children from her first marriage, which ended in 1989. She later married Portuguese engineer Rick da Silva in 1999, and they remained married until his death in 2020.
