James Van Der Beek's family has raised more than US$1mil (RM3.9mil) in a GoFundMe campaign following the actor's death.

The Dawson's Creek star died Wednesday (Feb 11) after an ongoing battle with colorectal cancer. The GoFundMe campaign was started for Van Der Beek's wife, Kimberly, and their six children as they face "not only emotional challenges but also significant financial strain," according to the campaign page.

"In the wake of this loss, Kimberly and the children are facing an uncertain future. The costs of James's medical care and the extended fight against cancer have left the family out of funds," the GoFundMe page states.

"They are working hard to stay in their home and to ensure the children can continue their education and maintain some stability during this incredibly difficult time. The support of friends, family, and the wider community will make a world of difference as they navigate the road ahead."

Van Der Beek grew up in Cheshire and graduated from Cheshire Academy in 1995. He starred in the New England-based television show Dawson's Creek as Dawson Leery from 1998 to 2003 for six seasons. Van Der Beek also was known for his work in the 1999 film Varsity Blues, in which he starred as Jonathon "Mox" Moxon.

The Connecticut native announced in November 2024 that he was diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer, and he raised money for cancer organisations and his own cancer treatment leading up to his death.

Donations to the GoFundMe for Van Der Beek's family contribute to covering the family's living expenses, bills and supporting the children's education, according to the campaign page.

As of Thursday morning, the GoFundMe campaign had received more than US$1.3mil (RM5.07mil) from fans, friends and others.

"Every donation, no matter the size, will help Kimberly and her family find hope and security as they rebuild their lives," the GoFundMe page reads. – The Middletown Press/Tribune News Service
