Hong Kong actor Roger Kwok and former TVB star Cindy Au shocked fans in May last year when they announced the end of their 18-year marriage.

Since then, both parties – who tied the knot in 2006 – have remained tight-lipped about the divorce, choosing not to address the matter publicly.

In a recent interview with Hong Kong media, however, Kwok candidly reflected on the reasons behind their separation.

The 61-year-old shared that when he started dating Au, 45, their relationship was smooth sailing at first.

However, about six to nine months in, tensions began to surface as their differences became apparent.

Kwok admitted that he wasn’t blameless in the marriage’s downfall.

He said he had been too controlling, always trying to manage every aspect of Au's life and expecting her to conform to his views.

When conflicts arose, instead of communicating, the Life Made Simple star would shut himself off – a habit that left Au feeling lost and uncertain about their relationship.

Kwok also revealed that his personality once made him a “terrifying father” to his two children – Brad, 17, and Blair, 14.

Reflecting on his past, he acknowledged being too strict and unreasonable toward his son, often setting high standards for the latter.

Kwok added that the divorce gave him room for deep self-reflection, allowing him to realise there were many areas in his life that needed change and improvement.

Today, Kwok shares a close bond with his two children, who have been a strong source of comfort and support. Both of them are even encouraging him to find love again.

“Both of my kids are mature and open-minded. I’ve always made it a point to communicate with them openly, even when it came to discussing my divorce,” he said in a previous interview with Hong Kong’s Oriental Daily.

Earlier in May, rumours surfaced that Kwok was romantically linked to 23-year-old actress Hilary Chong after tabloids claimed he had been giving her private tennis lessons following their collaboration on the TVB drama Golden Forest.

Meanwhile, Au is rumoured to be dating again after she was recently spotted enjoying a meal with a man at a restaurant.

When asked for a comment, Kwok firmly responded: “I won’t answer this question.”
