Former Hong Kong actor Lawrence Yan has died. He was 59.
In a statement on Friday (Oct 31), his wife Fang Xin-yuan revealed that the former ATV star passed away peacefully in Shanghai on Oct 21, surrounded by his family. She didn’t disclose the cause of death.
The news came as a shock to fans, as Yan had posted a cheerful selfie on Facebook just a day before his death, appearing to be in good health and spirits.
“Throughout his life, he was gentle and gracious, his artistry shone brightly over Hong Kong, and his kindness touched all who knew him. His sudden departure feels like a star falling from the sky. Our hearts ache with grief,” Fang said.
She added that the funeral arrangements will be kept simple as a nod to her late husband’s humble and low-profile demeanour.
Further details about the date and venue of the memorial service will be communicated to friends and colleagues at a later date.
“We thank all friends and colleagues for the love and support shown to him over the years and hope everyone will remember his artistic legacy and virtuous conduct,” Fang concluded.
Earlier in May, Yan revealed that he had been urgently hospitalised, saying: "Danger often occurs without warning."
Yan kickstarted his entertainment career in 1989 after graduating from TVB’s martial arts training programme.
During his time with the broadcaster, he appeared in several dramas – including The Challenge Of Life, Virtues Of Harmony II and Forensic Heroes II, among others.
After his contract with TVB ended in 1992, he joined ATV, where he starred in productions like Who’s The Winner III, Heroic Legend Of The Yang’s Family, A Cruel Lover and more.
In 2009, Yan stepped away from acting to focus on the catering industry in Shenzhen and Shanghai.
