Hong Kong singer-actor Ronald Cheng is in the process of finalising his divorce from former TV news anchor Sammie Yu, whom he married in 2011.

The pair appeared at the Wan Chai Family Court on Tuesday (June 17) for a closed-door hearing.

Cheng, 53, was joined by his father while Yu, 45, was accompanied by her friends and a lawyer.

Speaking to reporters after the hearing, Cheng shared that the judge had granted him permission to make a public statement regarding his divorce.

The singer also disclosed that he is currently seeking custody of their 13-year-old daughter and 10-year-old son.

“I respect the court, which is why I’ve refrained from speaking publicly until the judge made a decision. The children are doing fine,” he said, adding that they’re aware of the situation.

In another statement posted on social media, Cheng dismissed the claim that he had offered only HK$8,000 (RM4,327) per child in monthly support, calling it “significantly inaccurate”.

Hong Kong magazine East Week reported earlier in April that Yu deemed the proposed amount insufficient to cover their children’s daily expenses – a disagreement that allegedly played a key role in their decision to divorce.

“The rumour has affected me, my children and my family. I want to confirm that we’re in the process of finalising our divorce.

“I hope to protect our children and family while minimising the use of public resources,” he said, adding that the statement had been agreed upon by Yu.

Speculation about Cheng and Yu’s marriage being on the rocks emerged on March 13, when the latter posted several photos of her birthday celebration with Cheng absent.

The rumours heated up when the couple unfollowed each other on Instagram.

They were later seen attending a closed-door hearing at the Wan Chai Family Court on April 15 but declined to comment at that time.
