Singaporean actor-singer Desmond Ng has tied the knot.

In an Instagram post on March 28, the 37-year-old Mediacorp artiste revealed that his wife is Kanny Theng, 38, an actress and host with Singapore-based entertainment company King Kong Media Production.

The couple have been dating for about 10 years, and met through mutual friends.

He proposed on Jan 9, 2024, near the top of the Seven Star Mountain at Taiwan’s Yangmingshan National Park, during a trip with about 20 friends.

Knowing that she did not want an engagement ring, he got down on one knee and popped the question with a steel Cartier watch that she had been eyeing for some time, as well as a bouquet of roses.

They initially planned to skip the wedding dinner and just register their marriage at the Registry of Marriages on March 28. But after discussing with their families six months ago, they decided to go ahead with an intimate wedding dinner.

Ng, who received his first Best Actor nomination at Star Awards 2023 for his role in the hit Channel 8 series Your World In Mine (2022), told The Straits Times in a phone interview on March 21: “We could tell from the tone of their voices that they were expecting something, so I think it is proper that we at least hold something to make our parents feel good.

“March 28 is also an auspicious date which falls on Kanny’s birthday month, so it can be a date we use to mark our relationship from now on.

“I am looking forward to the wedding because it is a happy moment I can share with everyone.”

The couple said they started out as friends, and even after romance blossomed, were “so chill” about their relationship that they do not remember the date or year they got together. Until today, they cannot agree on who pursued whom.

Nonetheless, Ng – who debuted as a getai singer in 2009 – said he was attracted to Theng, who has acted in local movies Money No Enough 3 (2024) and Take 2 (2017), because she was quite different from him.

He said: “She is more adventurous, spontaneous and ‘happening’. She pushes me out of the house and encourages me to experience more of the outside world, and I like that. She also cooks much more than me, and often cooks too much food.”

Theng praised Ng’s kindness, saying: “He is really nice to kids, and communicates very well with the elderly. This convinced me he is a good person.”

She also shared they hope for a child in a few years.

“It took us a long time to feel romantically about each other because we are so chill. But that is also the beauty of our relationship,” she said.

“Love feels so natural, easy and effortless between us, so we know we are right for each other.” – The Straits Times/Asia News Network
