Hong Kong actress Carina Lau faced a traumatic ordeal in 1990 when she was abducted for several hours, reportedly due to rejecting a film offer and provoking an investor with secret society links.
During her captivity, her kidnappers forcibly took nude pictures of her and demanded a ransom for her release.
In a recent episode of his online programme, filmmaker Wong Jing alleged that the kidnapping may have been a case of mistaken identity.
The 69-year-old claimed that the original target was actually Elizabeth Lee, the first runner-up in the 1987 Miss Hong Kong beauty pageant.
Lee, 61, who is now retired from the entertainment industry, has starred in shows such as The Trail Of Love (1995), Dark Tales (1996) and more.
“I heard at the time that the target of the perpetrators was not Carina but Elizabeth. While following her, they happened to encounter Carina having lost track of Elizabeth, so they decided to switch their target to Carina,” Wong said, as quoted by HK01.
He added that Lau, 59, was forcibly hauled out of her vehicle while she waiting for a friend. She was on the way to fellow actor Michael Miu’s home when the incident occurred.
“She was unlucky to cross paths with these people, who were not professional criminals but small-time thugs. It was a very unfortunate incident.”
Reports indicate that Lau chose not to report her abduction to the police, opting to move on and leave the painful experience behind her.
However, her trauma resurfaced in 2002 when a magazine published topless photos of her taken during her captivity.
In a previous interview with Hong Kong media, Lau admitted that the incident deeply affected her mental health.
However, she has since forgiven both her kidnappers and the magazine, acknowledging that the experience ultimately made her stronger.
