Taiwanese singer Rainie Yang has shocked her fans by revealing that she and her husband, Chinese singer Li Ronghao, held their wedding ceremony in secret in 2024.

Yang, 40, and Li, 39, registered their marriage in September 2019, but speculation abounded over when they would officially walk down the aisle.

On Feb 18, Yang shared on social media a back view shot of her in a white wedding gown and Li in a white suit, with the caption: “First wedding anniversary.”

Yang, known for hits such as Ambiguous (2005) and Take Me Away (2008), included a heart emoji and the hashtag #20240218 in the post.

Several netizens expressed surprise that the celebrity couple kept their big day under wraps for a whole year, while others asked Yang to share more photos of the occasion.

Taiwanese actress-host Sunnie Huang, one of Yang’s bandmates from the now-defunct Taiwanese girl group 4 In Love, might have dropped a clue that Yang invited only her close friends and family to the intimate wedding when she commented on Yang’s Instagram post: “Super touching, happiness index 100,000,000.”

Yang and Li have kept their relationship mostly low-profile, with occasional public displays of affection on social media whenever they share couple photos during their birthdays or Chinese New Year.

After registering their marriage, she reportedly said they were busy with work and had not nailed down any plans for a wedding.

She also previously stated there would be “three nos” for the event - “no” to holding it on an island, “no” to flower girls and page boys, and “no” to throwing the bridal bouquet. She even jokingly told one of her best friends, Taiwanese singer Will Pan, to give up the idea of being one of the groomsmen.

The Taiwanese media noted that her post came an hour before Taiwanese actress Michelle Chen’s announcement on the same day that she and Chinese actor Chen Xiao have divorced after more than eight years of marriage.

Yang and Michelle Chen have been close pals since they starred in Taiwanese idol drama Why Why Love (2007), while both Chen Xiao and Li hail from China’s Anhui province. – The Straits Times/Asia News Network
