Getai personality and singer Angie Lau has died at the age of 58 following a battle with cancer.
The star, who was the younger sister of getai singer Liu Lingling, 62, died on Feb 9, according to her obituary. Lau was the winner of the second season of Mediacorp’s reality singing competition for getai stars, Getai Challenge, in 2018.
Her obituary was posted on social media, including on Liu’s Facebook page. Her wake will be held at Singapore Funeral Parlour’s (91 Tampines Link) Lily Room until Feb 13. The rites and memorial service will be held on Feb 13 at 9.45am and the cortege will leave for Mandai Crematorium at 11am that day.
According to Chinese publication Lianhe Zaobao, Lau was first diagnosed with stage three breast cancer and lymphoma in 2014. She had a breast cancer relapse in 2023, which was diagnosed as stage four, with cancer cells having spread to her bones and lungs.
She was also later diagnosed with brain cancer with multiple small tumours, which were removed with surgery.
When Zaobao spoke to Lau in September 2024, she said she was exhausted by her physical ailments, and doctors could not tell her how long more her chemotherapy treatment would be.
She added: “It’s just something that I have to continue treating... I’ve learnt a lot from my illness. I comfort myself with the thought that perhaps this is a life lesson I have to confront.”
She told Zaobao that she watched K-drama Queen Of Tears (2024) and the fourth season of Chinese variety series Call Me By Fire, which aired in 2024, to distract herself from the pain of the disease.
Lau is survived by her two teenage children – an 18-year-old son and a 16-year-old daughter – with her ex-husband, whom she divorced in 2019.
In a Facebook post, Liu thanked the public for the love shown for her sister. When contacted by Zaobao after her sister’s death, Liu replied over text, saying: “I’ve been busy taking care of my sister, my mother and my sister’s children... Thank you everyone for your concern.” – The Straits Times/Asia News Network
