Everything Everywhere All at Once continued its out-of-this-world awards season at Sunday’s Screen Actors Guild Awards, where stars Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis won top honors.

Yeoh was named outstanding film actress for her performance in the multiverse-jumping drama-comedy, while Quan became the first Asian performer to win best supporting actor. The film also won the award for best cast.

“This is not just for me. This is for every little girl that looks like me,” Yeoh, 60, said in an emotional acceptance speech at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Century City, California.

“Thank you for giving me a seat at the table, because so many of us need this,” she continued. “We want to be seen. We want to be heard, and tonight you have showed us it is possible.”

Quan, who debuted as a child actor in 1984′s Indiana Jones And The Temple of Doom, spoke about going nearly two decades between roles during the 2000s.

“This moment no longer belongs to just me. It also belongs to everyone who had asked for change,” said Quan, 51, who also won Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice honors this year and is nominated for an Oscar.

“When I stepped away from acting, it was because there were so few opportunities. Now, tonight, here we are.”

Curtis, who won best supporting actress, recalled agreeing to star in Everything Everywhere as soon as she found out she’d be working with Yeoh, despite being told the comedy-drama was “a little weird.”

“I said, ‘Yeah, but she’s in it?’... ‘And I get to be opposite her?... I’ll do it,’” Curtis said.

Everything Everywhere entered Sunday’s (Feb 26) show with five nominations, tying it with The Banshees of Inisherin – Martin McDonaugh’s dark dive into a damaged friendship – for the most of any film.

Both were nominated for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture, as were Steven Spielberg’s semi-autobiographical The Fabelmans; the 1920s-set Babylon starring Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie; and the Rooney Mara-led drama Women Talking, adapted from a 2018 novel.

Brooklyn-born Jeremy Allen White won best actor in a comedy series for his performance as chef Carmy Berzattoon on The Bear, while Juilliard alum Jessica Chastain took home best actress in a TV movie or limited series for George & Tammy, in which she portrays late country music star Tammy Wynette.

Sitcom Abbott Elementary was named outstanding ensemble in a comedy series. In January, the ABC show created by and starring Quinta Brunson led all series with three Golden Globes trophies.

HBO’s resort-set anthology The White Lotus won the SAG honour for ensemble in a drama series, while star Jennifer Coolidge won best actress in the genre.

Other winners included Ozark star Jason Bateman for actor in a drama series, Hacks star Jean Smart for actress in a comedy series and 1883 star Sam Elliott for actor in a TV movie or limited series.

“What can I say in 45 seconds after just receiving the most meaningful acknowledgment of my 55-year career?” Elliott said during his acceptance speech. “From a group of my peers, many of whom I don’t even know.”

SAG also honoured Sally Field with the lifetime achievement award for a career that’s included roles in Norma Rae, Places In The Heart and Forrest Gump.

The SAG Awards regularly serve as a predictor for the Academy Awards, including last year, when each of the acting winners were the same. CODA won best cast at the 2022 SAG Awards before taking home the Oscar for best picture.

Sunday’s SAG Awards aired on Netflix’s YouTube channel after the show left its longtime home on TNT and TBS. The ceremony will move to the main Netflix streaming service next year. – New York Daily News/Tribune News Service
