Days after his death, Taylor Hawkins loomed large at the Grammys Sunday night.
The 50-year-old Foo Fighters drummer was found dead in his hotel room in Bogota, Colombia, on March 25, according to local health officials. The band was in town to play the Festival Estereo Picnic that night at the end of their Latin America tour.
A cause of death has not been determined, but the drummer had 10 substances in his system, including opioids, benzodiazepines, tricyclic antidepressants and THC, according to a preliminary toxicology test.
“His musical spirit and infectious laughter will live on with all of us forever,” the band said in a statement.
The Foo Fighters were originally supposed to perform at the Grammys, but pulled out of the show, as well as their upcoming tour dates, “to grieve, to heal, to pull our loved ones close, and to appreciate all the music and memories we’ve made together.”
Instead, footage of Hawkins and the band opened the “in memoriam” segment, backed by There Goes My Hero.
The Foo Fighters were nominated for three Grammys this year and won in all three categories: best rock performance for Making A Fire, best rock song for Waiting On A War and best rock album for Medicine At Midnight. – New York Daily News/Tribune News Service
