Legendary martial artist and actor Sammo Hung has signed up to star in a new Hong Kong movie.

When asked why he is back to work – especially after his knee surgery in 2017 – the 69-year-old actor told the Hong Kong media: “No money! The most important thing is the production team is willing to pay me!"

We hope that was said in jest.

Hung's latest project is the action flick Kowloon Walled City which also stars Louis Koo, Richie Ren and Raymond Lam.

The actors were present at the blessing ceremony for the film on Nov 30.

Hung said that he was looking forward to starring in this film as there aren't many Hong Kong flicks which feature a full Hong Kong cast these days. Hung revealed that he will have some action scenes in the movie but added that he will leave majority of the fight scenes to his younger co-stars.

Directed by Cheang Pou Soi, this film is based on the comic City Of Darkness, which is set in the 1970s-1980s and sees the Hong Kong police fight crime and corruption in the notorious Kowloon Walled City. The slum was eventually demolished by Hong Kong government in the mid 1990s.

Koo, who plays a gangster in the film, said that most of the actors had to undergo training in order to perform their own stunts.

"The main cast trained for one year before filming, so it's very tough. Unless they are very difficult or dangerous scenes requiring body doubles, the action scenes will be completed by the actors themselves," Koo, who is also the producer of the film, told Hong Kong media at the ceremony.
