Scam callers target everyone, even celebrities. Korean actress Choi Ye-bin can testify to this as she recalled losing all her savings to a scammer.

Choi made a guest appearance on JTBC's Ask Us Anything alongside her The Penthouse co-stars Kim Hyun-soo and Jin Ji-hee on Oct 16. During a segment of the show, she shared her experience of a phishing scam.

"I thought voice phishing scams were always family-related. I never imagined that someone would impersonate (an employee of) a federal institution," she said. The caller was pretending to be a prosecutor and claimed that the money in the actress' account has been used in connection to a crime. "If you don't cooperate, you'll have to be investigated as well," the caller told Choi.

They even prompted her to search them up online to convince her of their legitimacy. "I check (the scam caller's) name, photo and everything online so I believed them right away. We had talked on the phone for an hour," admitted the 23-year-old.

The actress was told to transfer all her money to a gift certificate for the time being. Choi had a total of RM3,160 in her bank account at the time as it was before she embarked a career in showbiz.

The scammer then instructed her to pass them the certificate number and promised to return her savings in cash after the investigation.

It was only later when her gym trainer had questioned her if she was sure it wasn't voice phishing that she knew she had been duped.
