Korean actress Im Soo-hyang is set to star in a Korean remake of the popular American series, Jane The Virgin.
Y Tree Company revealed on Oct 6 that Im will be reuniting with her New Tales Of Gisaeng co-star Sung Hoon for the upcoming series titled Starting Today, We. The duo debuted in 2011 and rose to fame through their leading roles in the K-drama. Actors Shin Dong-wook and Hong Ji-yoon have also been cast as main characters.
The rom-com drama Starting Today, We will follow Oh Woo-ri, played by Im, who has chosen to maintain her chastity as a promise to her grandmother. In an unexpected turn of events, a doctor's mistake during her regular medical check-up results in her getting pregnant.
The 31-year-old star's character is an assistant writer for a popular drama and viewers will follow her as she navigates the changes in life caused by the unexpected pregnancy.
The US series, which stars Gina Rodriguez, made its debut in 2014 and lasted for five seasons. Rodriguez won a Golden Globe in the Best Actress – Television Series Musical or Comedy in 2014 for her turn as Jane.
Some similarities between this Korean remake and the original can already be seen, with Woo-ri caught in the same mishap which leads to her pregnancy. While the backstory of Im's character differs, certain characters on the show remain the same. An example of this is Shin's character Lee Kang-jae, who is the protagonist's boyfriend. He is a police detective who works with the major crimes division, much like Jane's boyfriend who is also a police detective.
Despite no official release date revealed, Starting Today, We has already completed its script reading and will begin filming soon.
