Taiwanese actor-model Ethan Ruan got candid about his difficult relationship with his father, stating, "I never want to be like him."
"My father has a side to him that I dislike the most. He used a bad and wrong way to express his love towards us, ” he says during an emotional scene in a Chinese variety show on Jan 9, with the rest of the cast huddled over a bonfire.
The 38-year-old actor didn't go into details about what exactly transpired between them. Ruan's father is a soldier, his mother is a military nurse and his brother and air force pilot.
Growing up, Ruan says he always wanted to speak to him more but found it difficult because their relationship was so distant.
A teary-eyed Ruan admits there's still unresolved business. "Children who haven't reconciled with their parents will never become adults. I think it's time I became an adult."
The actor relied on his grandfather for emotional support. After winning Best Actor at the 2010 Golden Horse Awards for his performance in Monga, Ruan said in a backstage interview:
“I was a very rebellious child. I took a long time to graduate from high school and almost everyone gave up on me. My grandfather was the only one who supported me.
"When I first started out in showbiz, there were many times when I couldn’t make ends meet and he would send money to me without telling anyone. I hope he lives a long and healthy life.”
