In the upcoming musical The Prom, audiences will get to see actress Kerry Washington – who is more known for her serious roles in films and TV shows – sing and dance for the first time on screen.
Although she only gets to this for a little bit in the film, it was something the Scandal star says she enjoyed tremendously.
“I love doing musicals, I love to sing and dance, ” the 43-year-old American tells StarLifestyle during a virtual interview for The Prom.
“It's so much fun for me. You know, as an actor, you get to do a lot of things; you get to learn to do new things and be forced outside of your comfort zone. So, it was really fun for me.”
Washington has done musical theatre in high school and college, but she has never sung on screen before. She is more known for her dramatic work in films like The Last King Of Scotland and Django Unchained, as well as TV shows like Scandal, Little Fires Everywhere and Confirmation.
The Prom – premiering Dec 11 on Netflix – is a musical feature directed by Ryan Murphy, which he adapted from the Broadway musical of the same name. It centres on a couple of Broadway stars going to a small town in Indiana to help out a teenage girl who wants to take her girlfriend for the prom but is banned from doing so by the school officials led by Washington's character.
The main cast is made up of Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, James Corden and Keegan-Michael Key. It also features newcomer Jo Ellen Pellman and Broadway star Ariana DeBose.
While in the film, Washington and DeBose play the mother and daughter who clash opinions, the actress shares that it was DeBose who helped her to prepare for her musical scene.
“I'm so grateful to Ariana because she does have so much experience in this area. And so, I got to be coached by a Broadway legend like in between takes, which was so fun.
“Ariana was so supportive and helpful even though I was playing the unsupportive mum; she was the very supportive co-star. Those were our roles and I loved every minute of it, ” adds Washington with a laugh.
