Sour Candy, the highly anticipated collaboration between Lady Gaga and K-pop girl group Blackpink, has finally dropped – and it instantly dominated music charts across the world.
In less than 24 hours, the song took top spot on the iTunes Top Songs charts in 57 regions, including Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Britain and more. The official audio video is currently sitting at 19.2 million views on YouTube.
Netizens have also discovered hints that a Sour Candy music video may be on the way. On May 22, Lady Gaga posted a "weather forecast" on her Instagram Story, with numbers next to the days of the week corresponding to the duration of each track on the Chromatica album. The numbers next to June 2, “2:37”, match the length of Sour Candy, suggesting that the star will be releasing something related to the song next Tuesday.
Finally, the official Facebook account for Universal Music Thailand posted this cryptic comment on the release post for Sour Candy: “MV hasn't been released yet, but wait a little bit. There may be a second round of surprise.”
Sour Candy has also received acclaim from various international publications:
“Lady Gaga and Blackpink are a little sweet, very spicy on Sour Candy, ” wrote MTV in their coverage of the release.
“Sour Candy, from Gaga’s upcoming album Chromatica, dropped on Thursday morning, providing a sugar-sweet club track for all our at-home parties, ” said Rolling Stone.
“The mouth-puckering dance pop delight, co-produced by BURNS, is 2:38 minutes of pure pop confection, oh silly us, we mean perfection, ” stated Radio.com.
Sour Candy marks the end of a one-year musical hiatus for Blackpink. The girl group will release its first studio album in September.
