Director and lead actor Syamsul Yusof is elated with the news of Munafik 2’s earnings. “A collection of RM40mil in 17 days is an extraordinary phenomenon in Malaysian cinematic history. It’s not easy for a Malay film to achieve this status. It’s a Malay film tsunami,” he said in a social media posting while thanking fans.

Munafik 2 tells the story of a cult leader who misinterprets Islamic teachings for his own gain. Ustaz Adam, played by Syamsul, takes on the cult leader as he comes to the aid of a single mother who is being held captive. The film also stars Maya Karin, Mawi and Nasir Bilal Khan.

The sequel was made with a budget of RM2.9mil.
