Anime soundtrack concerts have become an increasingly prominent feature of contemporary arts programming, bringing animation and live performance together.
The Jeffrey Cheah Performing Arts Centre (JCPAC), the new arts and culture hub at Sunway Square, Bandar Sunway, Petaling Jaya, is adding Jujutsu Kaisen In Concert to its launch programme, with performances on Oct 20 and 21 at The Grand Theatre.
Following a line-up announcement spanning musical theatre, theatre and comedy, including the sold-out Puteri Gunung Ledang The Musical, the 1,200-seat main venue at JCPAC is now set to welcome Malaysia’s anime following with a live concert dedicated to the acclaimed series.
The blockbuster demand for anime music in Malaysia is undeniable.
In July, the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) presented the music of Japanese composer and longtime Studio Ghibli collaborator Joe Hisaishi in Symphonic Ghibli II at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS in Kuala Lumpur. The sold-out nine-show series drew an estimated 8,100 attendees, while other major venues in the Klang Valley have similarly incorporated anime concerts into their programmes, at times attracting the cosplay community, a demographic closely associated with Japanese popular culture.
Jujutsu Kaisen In Concert, with an international cast, takes the spotlight next. Created by Japanese manga artist Gege Akutami, Jujutsu Kaisen is an ongoing anime series set in contemporary Japan, following Jujutsu Sorcerers who combat monstrous manifestations of negative human emotions known as Curses.
The upcoming 140-minute production at JCPAC, including an intermission, celebrates all three seasons of the anime through a live-to-screen concert featuring a hybrid ensemble of 12 musicians performing on classical and mainstream rock instruments.
This world tour series is produced by GEA Live (Netherlands) and RoadCo Entertainment (United States), in partnership with Japan’s Toho Animation.
“Jujutsu Kaisen is an anime defined by its emotional weight, visual language, and music. This concert brings those elements together in a live setting, combining an exceptional band with cinematic visuals.” says Floris Douwes, producer and managing director at GEA Live.
The concert revisits key moments from the series, including Sukuna’s awakening, Gojo’s Domain Expansion, Black Flashes and the Shibuya battles. Hiroaki Tsutsumi’s music will be performed live in synchronisation with selected scenes, visuals and dialogue from the anime.
While the projected scenes provide the narrative context, the live performance remains central to the experience, combining music, visuals and storytelling in an immersive concert presentation.
The Malaysian stop at JCPAC forms part of the Jujutsu Kaisen In Concert production’s year-end tour, which includes venues across Australia, Hong Kong, South Korea and Singapore.
