Award-winning Broadway classic The Sound Of Music is ready to meet Malaysian musical fans when it opens at Istana Budaya in Kuala Lumpur this December.
The news of the show playing in the Malaysian capital after it finishes its season in Singapore is bound to get its all-ages fanbase excited in these parts.
Run to the hills with the titular song The Sound Of Music, learn how to sing with the iconic Do-Re-Mi and get whimsical with My Favorite Things in this touring production directed by Broadway veteran Jack O’Brien.
The Sound Of Music is produced by Broadway International Group and its founders Simone Genatt and Marc Routh, and presented by Base Entertainment Asia (Base).
It is set to be the biggest international musical to grace the Malaysian stage since the pandemic.
Before the pandemic hit, the international musical Cats had its January 2020 run cancelled at Istana Budaya in October 2019 due to unforeseen circumstances, while West End favourite Matilda The Musical at Istana Budaya (scheduled for June 2020) was postponed in May 2020 due to the pandemic.
“It is huge for Malaysia to be having its first international musical after a two-and-a-half year hiatus,” says Datuk Jared Lim, Base Entertainment Asia chairman.
The production in KL is looking for 18 children in Malaysia, ages between six and 14, to play the roles of the six younger von Trapp children, Friedrich, Louisa, Kurt, Brigitta, Marta and Gretl, in three separate casts.
Auditions will be held at Dominus Arts Venue at Wangsa Maju - Grand Hall on June 28 and 29.
“To be able to give local talent the chance to star in an international production from Broadway is not only a dream come true, the possibilities of where this opportunity will take them are endless,” offers Chantal Prudhomme, Base chief executive officer.
Set in pre-World War II Austria,The Sound Of Music tells the story of Maria, a cheery governess who reintroduces music to the home of wealthy widower Captain von Trapp and his seven children.
The Sound Of Music is one of the most acclaimed Broadway musicals of all time, winning five Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and the Grammy Award for Best Show Album. It was adapted into an Oscar-winning film starring Julie Andrews in 1965.
The Sound Of Music last performed in KL in June 2011 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, featuring a London cast.
Tickets for upcoming The Sound Of Music will go on sale at the end of June.
