May the Force be with you! MPYO plays a stirring 'Star Wars' tribute to frontliners

The Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO) has paid tribute to frontliners in Malaysia (and the rest of the world) with a stirring version of the Star Wars main theme.

Led by MPYO’s principal conductor Naohisa Furusawa, the six-minute long video, posted recently on the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra’s (MPO) Facebook page features 38 musicians playing the iconic Main Title - Star Wars Suite composed by the legendary John Williams.

The video - recorded remotely - begins in typical Star Wars style with a rolling title that reads “Star Wars: The Movement Control Order”. This is followed by a positive message that reads “We stand in solidarity with our frontliners. May the force be with you. Thank you for keeping Malaysia safe!”

A very enthusiastic Naohisa, who is seen wearing a Star Wars T-shirt, then waves his hands and the video zooms out to reveal all the musicians in their respective homes playing the uplifting Star Wars theme.

Early this month, the MPYO posted a whimsical hand-washing video tutorial, performing British composer John Hilton’s Come Follow.

It may be a while before patrons can return to Dewan Filharmonik Petronas (DFP) in KLCC to attend shows. The DFP will remain closed until further notice.

All of DFP's concerts, masterclasses, recitals and other activities scheduled for May and June have been postponed. The World Of Penderecki concert, scheduled for May 3, has been cancelled due to the death of the legendary Polish composer and conductor Krzysztof Penderecki on March 29.
