Remember when Ed Sheeran got turned into a wayang kulit shadow puppet last year?
Made by modern wayang kulit revivalists Fusion Wayang Kulit, it was commissioned by Warner Music Malaysia for a new video to accompany Ed Sheeran’s new single Happier. While the original music video features a puppet that resembles Sheeran, the Malaysian version shows a wayang kulit of the singer heartbroken that his ex (a balloon) is now in the arms of another er, teddy bear.
Sheeran was in town last week for another Malaysian concert, and Warner Music Malaysia managed to present the puppet to the pop superstar in person.
The puppet was created by Fusion Wayang Kulit, founded by creative designers Tintoy Chuo and Take Huat, and took a about three weeks to design and produce, according to Chuo.
"The puppet was not hard to design, but adding the actual guitar strings onto the puppets was a bit tricky," said Chuo in an interview. "The hardest part of it was drawing his head, to make sure it looks like him!"
The puppet incorporates actual guitar strings into the guitar, which was modelled after a trees of life puppet (Pohon Beringin). Other signature characteristics of the singer included into the design are a Pounamu necklace from New Zealand that Sheeran has been known to wear, and the tattoos on his forearms.
Fusion Wayang Kulit is best known for its wayang kulit depictions of pop culture icons such as Star War characters and Marvel and DC superheroes. They have also made puppets of other famous people like Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Irish comedians and TV personalities Ed Byrne and Dara O Briain. They also made a puppet of Lucio from the game Overwatch, and presented it to the character's voice actor Johnny Cruz when he was in KL recently.
