Malaysian graffiti artist Katun is kicking off the year on a high note by contributing the artwork for American R&B star Chris Brown’s new single Undecided.

“Starting my 2019 with a collaboration artwork for @chrisbrownofficial new single #undecided,” he posted on his Instagram account (@katun_) along with photos showing off the finished work as well as work-in-progress shots.

Katun’s artwork for Undecided sports his trademark bright colours. It shows a guy facing a grinning hooded figure who offers two life choices in his hands - the proverbial crossroads in our protagonist’s life. Four doors suspended in mid-air, with the words “love”, “fear”, “empathy” and “sacrifice” emblazoned across each, circle the duo.

Undecided is likely to appear on Brown’s forthcoming Indigo album, which is slated for a late February release.

“I was hanging out with my friends when I received an email from Chris Brown’s creative director. It was such a unexpected surprise, I even wondered if it was legit at that time. I still cannot believe that I got this opportunity to do an artwork for Chris Brown’s single!” says Katun, 31, when contacted recently.

Katun’s art mirrors the dilemma Brown sings about on this new track as he debates whether to take a relationship to the next level.

“I was given 100% freedom to create the artwork. Basically, I was told that Chris Brown wanted ‘something mysterious, something that stands out’, so I sent over a few sketches that they could select from. He chose this artwork of the kid with the fortune guardian - which is kind of a representation of how difficult it is to make choices in life, or to know what lies ahead," he explains.

Klang Valley-based Katun (Abdul Hafiz Abdul Rahman) is a well-known name in the Malaysian graffiti scene, with numerous tie-ups with commercial brands and large scale murals bearing his tag in the last 10 years. His art has been featured on clothing and watches.

Katun also exhibits works in non-mainstream art spaces. He currently has a collaboration work with fellow street artist Orkibal at the Bunnies: The Secret Hideout exhibition at Awegallery in Petaling Jaya.

The name Katun comes from his love of reinterpreting cartoon characters, a passion he has nurtured since his childhood days, which remains a big part of his artistic identity today.
