Four works by famed modernist painter and poet Latiff Mohidin headline the KL Lifestyle Art Space’s (KLAS) Art Auction, which will take place at the KLAS gallery in Petaling Jaya on Sept 23 .
Apart from his paintings, there is a woodblock print, a part of the Berlin Series produced while Latiff was studying art in Germany in 1962.
However, it's the two late 1960s-era works from the Negri Sembilan-born artist’s renowned Pago Pago series that will be much coveted by art lovers at the auction.
Earlier this year, Latiff, 77, had the honour of exhibiting a major show Pago Pago: Latiff Mohidin (1960-1969) at the renowned Centre Pompidou in Paris. This exhibition, an encapsulation of a formative period in Latiff’s career, is now showing at the Ilham Gallery in KL.
Through the decades, his expressionistic paintings often exhibit a keen eye for structure and an underlying lyricism.
At the KLAS auction, the Pago Pago 1969 works were formerly acquired by Dr Brian Aylward, an Irish lecturer who was living in Malaysia and worked at the Department of Chemistry, Universiti Malaya from 1968-1971.
The auction also coincides with KLAS’s seventh anniversary.
“Having the Latiff works in this auction makes it a real celebration,” says Datuk Gary Thanasan, KLAS founder.
“It’s the perfect time for new collectors to get the rare and most sought-after pieces which are also historically important,” he adds.
“This auction has a total of 82 pieces. Nearly 90% of the art is Malaysian and 10% are international artworks by reputable artists whose works have been sold by the top international auction houses.”
Other highlights at the auction include works from Cheong Soo Pieng, Kow Leong Kiang, Khalil Ibrahim, Ibrahim Hussein, Yusof Ghani, Jolly Koh and Zulkifli Yusof.
The auction will be held at KLAS gallery, 31, Jalan Utara in Petaling Jaya at 1pm on Sept 23. Registration opens at 11.30am.
