THERE is a familiar ritual at every International Planters Conference (IPC).
The final applause fades. Delegates exchange one last business card, pose for photographs and begin their journeys home. The conference is over. The real work begins.
Having attended such gatherings as a researcher, later as a chief executive and industry representative, and now as a retired planter who writes, I have come to believe that a conference is not measured by the number of papers presented.
It is measured by the questions that remain after the microphones are switched off.
The 11th IPC 2026, organised by the Incorporated Society of Planters, carried the theme Future-Proofing Plantation Agriculture: Innovation, Resilience and Sustainability.
Its programme moved across productivity, mechanisation, digitalisation, talent, soil, environmental, social and governance (ESG) and leadership.
Read together, the papers portrayed an industry that knows it must change, but is still deciding how quickly, how deeply and at whose initiative.
For decades, plantation conversations revolved around yields, diseases, harvesting standards, labour, mechanisation and sustainability.
Those questions remain, but today’s planter must also understand artificial intelligence (AI), carbon accounting, biodiversity, geopolitics, digital traceability and public perception.
The estate and mill office has quietly become connected to a much larger world. Success is no longer judged only by tonnes per hectare. Increasingly, it is judged by credibility per hectare.
A programme that asked the industry to look again
The ministerial address by Datuk Seri Noraini Ahmad challenged the sector to strengthen research, innovation, technology adoption and talent development.
Climate variability, labour scarcity and geopolitical tensions are no longer distant headlines; they are operating realities.
Yet, one reminder cut through the conference’s enthusiasm for technology: human intelligence must remain at the centre of AI.
Technology will shape the future. Leadership, judgement and trust will determine whether it works.
Jeffry Faizal Kamaruddin grounded the conference theme in lessons from his experience at SD Guthrie. Future-proofing, in his telling, was not a fashionable phrase but a long-term management discipline.
Plantations do not move in PowerPoint time. Palms take years to mature, workers take time to train and technologies take even longer to become part of field culture.
The future rarely sends an invitation. Good management must arrive first.
Science, yield and the cost of getting the beginning wrong
Several presentations converged on a deceptively simple truth: the future of productivity is often decided long before the first bunch is harvested.
Ravigadevi Sambanthamurthi, a Fellow of the Royal Society, brought the discussion back to where every plantation begins: the seed.
Oil palm is planted for about 25 years, yet inferior or contaminated material can lock an estate into decades of underperformance. The Shell gene discovery and SureSawit DNA assays now allow fruit form, genetic purity and other traits to be tested before planting.
The economics are compelling.
Seed represents less than one per cent of a palm’s lifetime cost, while DNA testing adds only a small fraction more.
Saving at the nursery may therefore become a very expensive economy over the plantation’s life.
Her wider molecular toolbox included tissue culture, genomic selection, climate resilience and AI-assisted detection of off-type seedlings.
The message was clear: higher productivity and sustainability are not opposing goals. The science has advanced. Standards, investment decisions and management courage must catch up.
Tan Joon Sheong then showed that exceptional yields are not confined to research plots. Using Asian Agri’s Topaz DxP materials, he presented commercial results across several soil types, including selected fields exceeding 10 tonnes of crude palm oil hectare and broader areas sustaining seven to nine tonnes.
The real lesson was not the peak figure, but the system behind it. High-purity planting material must be supported by strong nursery practice, suitable density, water management, disciplined upkeep, timely harvesting and efficient milling.
A superior seed planted into an inferior operating system will still disappoint.
The road to “beyond imagination” begins by doing the ordinary exceptionally well, consistently across every hectare.
From technology to transformation
Gurcharan Singh moved the discussion from invention to execution.
The pandemic, he argued, did not create plantation weaknesses; it exposed labour dependence, uneven standards and operational fragility already present.
Wilmar’s response was an operational reset: accelerate replanting, redesign infrastructure for mechanisation, strengthen maintenance, digitalise field and mill systems and enforce standards consistently.
But machines alone do not transform plantations. Leadership, accountability, training, welfare and pride in work remain essential.
This gave weight to his challenge to the old “4D” image of plantation work as dirty, dangerous, difficult and demeaning. He coined the new “4D” as decent, disciplined, doable and dignified.
Changing the label is not enough. The lived reality must change first.
Mechanisation should remove drudgery. Digitalisation should empower, not merely monitor. Transformation may begin in the boardroom, but it becomes real only in the field.
Amir Hafiz Ahmed Khozim added a useful caution: technology should sharpen judgement, not replace it. Digital tools can flag risks and focus inspections, but the planter must still interpret, verify and act.
The goal is not a digital plantation, but better decisions in the plantation - silicon guided by soil sense.
Transformation must reach the ground
Datuk Dr Suzana Idayu Wati Osman brought the smallholder perspective into large-scale transformation.
Strategies conceived in headquarters can look very different from a settler’s kitchen table.
Using the Felda-FGV ecosystem, she showed how estate management, mechanisation, digitalisation and sustainability practices can be transferred meaningfully to smallholders. But technology and certification succeed only when they are affordable, practical and usable.
Smallholders must be active partners in transformation, not passive recipients. Scale may provide the engine, but inclusion determines whether the journey is shared.
My own presentation, “Talk, Truth and Tough Love”, argued that communication is no longer decoration but strategic infrastructure. The sector is rich in facts, reports and acronyms, yet often poor in public understanding.
We must translate, not merely transmit; speak honestly about trade-offs; and love the industry enough both to defend and reform it. A muddy boot may sometimes explain more than a 60-page report.
Back to the soil, mill and balance sheet
The second day returned the discussion to the ground beneath the palms and the numbers behind the business.
Dr Vijiandran Juva Rajah from United Plantations - top planter in the world, reminded us that no amount of digital sophistication can compensate for neglected soil.
Yield resilience begins with updated surveys, mapping and an honest understanding of each site’s limitations.
Soil health is more than fertility. It includes structure, chemistry, biology, moisture and the capacity to sustain productivity.
That requires water management, erosion control, biomass recycling, cover crops, frond stacking and nutrient stewardship based on the right source, rate, time and place.
The palm does not read dashboards or ESG reports. It responds to the living ground beneath it, and neglected soil eventually sends its own report through declining yield.
Rais Andersen extended that discussion underground through deep-soil ecology, disease-suppressive microbial
communities and streptomyces against ganoderma.
The proposition was thought-provoking, but microbial solutions must survive replicated trials, commercial scrutiny and estate variability.
Surendran Kuranadan carried AI into the mill, where every delay and unmeasured loss has a price. His system combined unmanned fresh fruit bunch grading, sensors, cameras, predictive maintenance and real-time control.
Reported results included higher oil extraction rate (OER), lower mesocarp losses, fewer breakdown hours and reduced manpower dependence.
Yet a mill is not intelligent merely because it has more screens. Artificial intelligence must answer to actual milling results: better extraction, lower losses, safer operations, stronger reliability and lower cost.
Jonathan Fun from SIPEF then tackled a tension many companies still manage separately: performance on one side, ESG on the other.
Yield, OER, cost, reliability and execution keep the business alive, but ESG must enter the same monthly rhythm, not sit in an annual report waiting for applause.
Poor labour practices, weak governance and environmental neglect eventually return as cost, risk and lost trust.
Over time, the two scorecards become one. The strongest ESG strategy is not a communication strategy. It is an operating strategy.
Dr Julian McGill of Glenauk Economics asked an equally uncomfortable question: if higher yields produce higher profits, why has the yield gap remained so stubborn?
His analysis suggested that large groups continue investing, while smaller producers have increasingly favoured dividends over capital expenditure.
Spending itself is no guarantee; it must be directed wisely towards replanting, roads, drainage, labour, agronomy and field execution.
The deeper concern is confidence. Labour uncertainty, taxation and policy risk can discourage investment in assets rooted in place and slow to reward.
Yield stagnation is therefore not only an agronomic problem. It is also an investment problem. Yield rarely collapses overnight. Sometimes it is underfunded quietly, season after season.
The wider view
The panel discussion, moderated by Dr Ramesh Veloo, widened the lens from individual interventions to whether the industry is truly ready for a changing world.
Izham Mustaffa framed future-proofing through climate volatility, labour, land constraints, planting material and tightening market expectations.
Dr Sathia Varqa showed how weather, biodiesel mandates, Indonesian export policy, fertiliser availability and crude-oil movements shape palm oil pricing.
An El Nino may begin in the Pacific, but its effects eventually reach the bunch, the balance sheet and the futures market.
Girish Mavath Ramachandran argued that palm oil should move beyond perpetual defence and be reintroduced through a more ambitious proposition: a highly productive tree crop, plantations transformed by technology, and a credible pathway towards carbon-negative production by 2040.
The claim is bold and will ultimately have to be proven through rigorous measurement, operational scrutiny and commercial reality.
Ricky Delimarta returned the discussion to people. Technology changes the job from muscle to mind, but innovation delivers little without workers, managers and smallholders able to use it.
Talent is not an human resource footnote; it is the industry’s operating system.
Together, the panel reminded us that resilience has four dimensions: productive land, credible markets,
measurable sustainability and capable people.
From diagnosis to responsible ideas
Throughout IPC, speakers and panelists laid out the industry’s challenges, often with polished, AI-assisted slides.
Diagnosis was plentiful. The harder task is to turn it into responsible, practical solutions.
The industry has enough mirrors showing where it stands; it needs more windows showing where it can go.
Price shapes investment. Investment shapes yield. Yield affects land pressure. Technology affects labour, talent affects adoption, and sustainability affects market access.
Everything is connected. No single machine, policy, certification scheme or keynote can future-proof the industry. Progress must come on several fronts at once.
Honouring those who planted beyond the field
Conferences are remembered not only for ideas, but also for the people they honour.
The Fellowship of the ISP conferred on Dr Ramesh Veloo and Haji Mohamad Fadzil Hitam celebrated two professionals whose careers strengthened the industry in complementary ways.
Dr Ramesh combined estate experience, scholarship, scientific research and leadership of ISP.
Haji Mohamad Fadzil contributed more than four decades across estate operations, corporate transformation, governance, mechanisation and professional development.
Their journeys differed, but their message was the same. Both invested not only in producing better crops, but in producing better people.
In an era celebrating automation, data and AI, the profession’s highest honours were bestowed not upon machines, but upon human beings.
The conference ends, the message continues
Perhaps the greatest transformation facing plantation agriculture is not technological. It is cultural.
We are moving from an industry that measured success mainly by production to one that must also measure resilience, trust, innovation, gender inclusivity and its ability to explain itself.
The next harvest will not belong only to those who grow better palms. It will belong to those who grow better people, stronger ideas and deeper public confidence.
IPC gave us science, technology, soil, management, talent, sustainability and tribute. The remaining task is not another diagnosis. It is disciplined adoption.
Some seeds are planted in the soil. Others are planted in the mind. The latter may take longer to mature, but they often leave the richer harvest.
