KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia-China Business Council (MCBC) Chairman Senator Tan Sri Low Kian Chuan, hosting a meeting with the Chief Executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region, Sam Hou Fai, and his visiting delegation. said Macao occupies a distinctive position in Malaysia’s engagement with China.
As the country’s precise connector with Portuguesespeaking economies, a core member of the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area, and the operator of a mature international MICE platform backed by a global Chinese business network, Macao offers Malaysian companies an efficient gateway into the Greater Bay Area as well as Lusophone and Spanish-speaking markets.
He added that Macao’s long-established overseas Chinese community remains an important bridge between the two sides, and that Malaysian business chambers and Chinese entrepreneurs are well placed to make fuller use of Macao’s platform functions — pairing Malaysian capacity in halal, agrofood, tourism and manufacturing with the Macao–Hengqin integration agenda.
Sam noted that President Xi Jinping’s state visit to Malaysia last year opened a new “Golden 50 Years” for China–Malaysia relations and created fresh opportunities for Macao and Malaysia.
Malaysia, he said, is among Macao’s most significant trading partners in ASEAN, with cooperation deepening across trade, exhibitions and tourism. Macao’s “1+4” appropriate economic diversification strategy — covering culture and tourism, traditional Chinese medicine, modern financial services and high technology — aligns closely with Malaysia’s own development priorities.
The current mission continues Macao’s collective outbound model, bringing Macao, Hengqin and Mainland enterprises across trade, technology, traditional Chinese medicine, culture and tourism, and the halal industry to meet Malaysian counterparts through promotional sessions, business matching and cooperation agreements.
Both sides exchanged views on areas of shared interest, including halal, tourism and MICE, traditional Chinese medicine and the digital economy, and agreed to maintain close communication.
The meeting reflects MCBC’s continuing role as Malaysia’s bridge to China’s markets — including the Greater Bay Area — connecting quality enterprises on both sides for mutual benefit.
