Foreign funds exit country for second week


PETALING JAYA: Foreign investors are net sellers of local equities for the second consecutive week, recording RM623.6mil in net outflows for the week ended Aug 14.

MBSB Research said that foreign funds were net sellers on all five trading days during the week, with the highest outflows recorded last Friday (RM181.3mil).

The top three sectors that recorded net foreign outflows were financial services (minus RM469.3mil), industrial products and services (minus RM121.2mil), and consumer products and services (minus RM89.6mil). The top three sectors that recorded net inflows from foreign institutions were transportation and logistics (RM103.8mil), telecommunications and media (RM34.9mil), and energy (RM19.7mil).

As foreign investors withdrew, retailers ended a two-week consecutive streak of net selling, with RM268.1mil in net inflows.

Local institutions extended to a three-week consecutive streak of net buying, recording RM355.5mil in net inflows.

MBSB Research said the average daily trading volume saw a broad-based decrease; retailers were down by minus 1.1%, local institutions by minus 10.9%, and foreign institutions by minus 3.7%.

“Across the eight Asian markets we monitor, foreign investors reverted to net buying after a week of net selling, with total net foreign inflows amounting to US$9.64bil,” the research house said.
