Well Chip plans new pawnshops to drive growth

KUALA LUMPUR: Well Chip Group Bhd plans to expand its pawnshop network in Melaka and Johor as it looks to strengthen its market presence and grow its pawnbroking business.

The pawnbroking group, which currently operates 27 pawnshops and five jewellery and gold retail outlets, said the expansion would focus on selected strategic locations to improve customer accessibility.

Well Chip said the plans are subject to the successful completion of its proposed rights issue, the timely utilisation of proceeds and the completion of renovation and fit-out works.

The expansion is supported by conditional approvals from the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) for 12 new pawnshops.

Upon full rollout and subject to final regulatory approvals, the group’s pawnbroking network could grow to 39 outlets from the current 27 in the coming quarters.

In the second quarter ended June 30, Well Chip’s net profit rose 17.9% to RM23.9mil, or earnings per share of 4.00 sen, lifting its first-half net profit by 35.7% to RM51.8mil, or 8.60 sen per share.

Quarterly revenue climbed 8.7% to RM71.6mil, bringing first-half revenue 17.3% higher to RM147.6mil.

Executive director and chief executive officer Ng Hooi Lang said the group’s first-half performance reflected continued customer demand for quick, short-term bridging financing.

“The growth in our earnings reflects our robust business model, disciplined execution and a focus on customer services.

“Our expansion plans are underpinned by the conditional approvals obtained for 12 new pawnshops, providing a clear path for future growth,” she said.
