George Kent to acquire 76% stake in Techkem for RM2mil

KUALA LUMPUR: George Kent (M) Bhd has proposed to acquire a 76% equity interest in Techkem Group Sdn Bhd, a water and wastewater solutions provider, for RM2mil cash.

In a statement, George Kent said the acquisition would strengthen its presence in the water infrastructure sector and expand its capabilities in potable water treatment, industrial wastewater treatment, sewerage treatment, water recycling and sustainable engineering solutions.

Techkem provides end-to-end services covering engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning (EPCC), consultancy, operation and maintenance (O&M), as well as design, build, operate and transfer (DBOT) projects. The company also distributes specialty chemicals for industrial and municipal applications.

Over the past decade, Techkem has delivered more than 65 water and wastewater treatment projects across the region.

The company owns a potable water treatment plant with an operational capacity of about 4,000 cubic metres per day under a concession running from 2025 to 2030. It is also developing a backwash water reclaim plant with a treatment capacity of 3,000 cubic metres per day, which is expected to be among the first facilities in Malaysia dedicated to washwater recovery and reuse.

As at May 31, 2026, Techkem had an outstanding order book of RM106.5mil and a tender book of approximately RM1.5bil.

George Kent said the acquisition is expected to contribute positively to the group's order book and tender pipeline, enhancing its growth prospects in the water and wastewater segment.

The proposed acquisition will be funded through internally generated funds and is expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2026.

Executive chairman Tan Sri Tan Kay Hock said the acquisition would broaden George Kent's technical capabilities and exposure to higher-growth segments within the water infrastructure industry.

“We believe the acquisition is timely given the growing demand for sustainable water infrastructure solutions and the long-term opportunities arising from Malaysia’s Water Sector Transformation 2040 agenda.
