Automotive industry’s TIV fell 15% to 61,250 units in May

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s automotive industry recorded a 15 per cent decline in total industry volume (TIV), falling to 61,250 vehicles in May 2026, compared to 72,113 vehicles in April 2026.

The Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) said the decline ended two consecutive months of growth.

"The lower TIV in May 2026 was mainly attributed to the long festive holiday period, encompassing Hari Raya Aidiladha, Pesta Kaamatan and Hari Gawai,” it said in a statement today.

Production also fell by 13 per cent year-on-year to 57,489 units in May 2026, compared to 66,354 units in May 2025.

For the January-May 2026 period, MAA said sales inched down one per cent to 315,568 units compared with 319,846 units in the corresponding period last year, while production fell four per cent to 287,477 units from 300,559 units previously.

Moving forward, MAA said it expects sales to regain momentum starting this month. - Bernama
