PETALING JAYA: SD Guthrie Bhd
and Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporation) (MBI Selangor) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to explore a strategic collaboration for an integrated development in Carey Island.
In a joint statement, the parties said the MoU establishes a framework for both parties to conduct feasibility studies and develop master planning for a minimum of 2,500 acres, with potential expansion up to 5,000 acres within Carey Island Estate.
“The proposed development in Carey Island will form a critical component of the proposed Third Port initiative, the Carey Island Port, within the Carey Island Special Economic Zone (SEZ).
“This will also reinforce the positioning of the SEZ as a catalytic economic hub, enabling the generation of high‑value economic activities on Carey Island while supporting the broader growth agenda for Southern Selangor.”
SD Guthrie group managing director Mohd Haris Mohd Arshad said this latest venture is a strategic opportunity for the company to participate meaningfully in the next phase of Selangor's economic growth, while prioritising sustainable development aligned with its "Beyond Zero" sustainability framework.
“A strategic and sustainable approach to developing Carey Island is critical – both to stimulate economic growth while preserving the irreplaceable value of the island to the plantation industry, and its unique heritage.
“This includes protecting its rich biodiversity and ensuring the needs and well-being of local communities are prioritised.”
He added that the development demonstrates how strategic land stewardship can unlock economic potential, while preserving environmental integrity and social balance, creating lasting impact for the state and its stakeholders.
Meanwhile, MBI Selangor’s group chief executive officer Datuk Saipolyazan M. Yusop highlighted the strategic importance of the partnership and reaffirmed MBI Selangor’s role in advancing sustainable growth for Selangor.
“As the State’s investment arm, MBI Selangor is committed to advancing strategic developments that generate long‑term value for Selangor.
“This collaboration will strengthen Carey Island’s road connectivity, infrastructure and utilities which are key enablers that will catalyse new economic activity within the Special Economic Zone.”
