PETALING JAYA: Quill Group has inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Chinese automobile manufacturer First Automotive Works (FAW) Group to be the importer and distributor of luxury car brand Hongqi in Malaysia.

According to Quill Group, Hongqi is scheduled to have its official launch in the Malaysian market before the end of 2026.

Under the MoU, the group will act as strategic partner and distributor, spearheading importation for the historic automotive brand. The partnership is expected to carve a path for Hongqi to establish its presence within the country’s ultra-luxury vehicle market.

In a statement, Quill Group managing director Datuk Dr Jennifer Low said the group is immensely proud to be entrusted to introduce the car brand into the local market.

“It is a uniquely special brand with a storied legacy, favoured by leaders and recognised globally for its uncompromising quality,” she added.

The marque, which is known as the official vehicle for Chinese state leaders, belongs to the state-owned FAW Group.

Its name, Hongqi, translates to “Red Flag” in Chinese, and is said to serve as an automotive symbol of national pride for its home country.

“With Malaysia’s robust bilateral relationship with China established since 1974, it is fitting that we are chosen as one of the premier right-hand drive markets for Hongqi’s strategic expansion,” Low said.

Quill Group said the collaboration would enable the brand’s distinguished design, exceptional performance, and internationally-recognised safety standards to be delivered to discerning consumers.

Low said the group aims to ensure a successful and prestigious entry for Hongqi, catering specifically to the growing demand for premium and ultra-luxury vehicles.

“Leveraging Quill Group’s extensive corporate expertise and commitment to excellence, we will bolster consumer confidence through comprehensive marketing programmes, uncompromising full-service after-sales support, and seamless parts availability,” she said.

More details around the official launch date, initial model line-up, and dealership network will be announced in due course.

Hongqi vehicles are currently exported by FAW Group to over 87 countries and regions globally, including Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and South-East Asia. The first Hongqi car was created in 1958, and has over the years become a banner of China’s automobile industry.

Its brand concept today represents a “new nobility and exquisiteness”, incorporating the excellence of oriental culture with modern fashion design and cutting-edge technology.
