PIAM rolls out interim measures to manage towing service limitations

KUALA LUMPUR: The General Insurance Association of Malaysia (PIAM) has introduced interim measures to support motor policyholders following disruptions in towing services linked to rising operational costs and industry pressures.

The association said its member companies have activated steps to assist customers, particularly in urgent situations such as accidents and breakdowns.

The measures include prioritising emergency assistance for motorists stranded in hazardous situations, encouraging advance scheduling for non-critical towing from safe locations, leveraging panel workshops to assist drivers, and offering reimbursement for independent towing services, subject to policy terms and conditions.

PIAM said that although the disruptions in towing services stem from external factors beyond the general insurance industry’s immediate control, it remains committed to addressing them through a unified approach.

"The industry will work collaboratively with our service partners, regulators, authorities and key stakeholders to navigate these pressures and find a sustainable and balanced way forward,” it said.

PIAM also advised policyholders to contact their insurers directly for updates, verify coverage before engaging independent towing services, and retain all receipts and service reports to facilitate reimbursement claims.

The measures come as tow truck services have been disrupted since yesterday, with operators undertaking a three-day strike to press for diesel subsidies. Disruptions are expected to continue until tomorrow.

A notice by Zurich Takaful indicated that the Klang Valley is likely to be among the areas most affected, with potential spillover to other parts of Peninsular Malaysia. - Bernama
