MMC Port Holdings achieves breakthrough in TEUs

PTP became the first local port to surpass the 13 million and 14 million TEU mark last year.

PETALING JAYA: MMC Port Holdings Bhd, wholly-owned subsidiary of MMC Corp Bhd, has achieved its strongest performance to date by surpassing 20 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) across its ports network.

In a statement, Malaysia’s biggest port operating group said solid performance was seen by Port of Tanjung Pelepas Sdn Bhd (PTP), Johor Port Bhd, Northport (M) Bhd, Penang Port Sdn Bhd and Tanjung Bruas Port Sdn Bhd.

The ports had landmark records on their own – PTP became the first local port to surpass the 13 million and 14 million TEU mark last year while Northport had its highest-ever annual container throughput of 3.80 million TEUs and its highest conventional cargo throughput at 12.90 million freight weight tonnes.

In addition, Johor Port documented a record-high annual container volume of 1.08 million TEUs as well as a monthly record of container throughput of 103,153 TEUs in August 2025.

Penang Port, on the other hand, witnessed a 8.9% in total ferry passenger ridership – hitting 3,131,131, up from 2,873,619 in 2024.

Tanjung Bruas Port recorded a container throughput of 31,032 TEUs – the highest volume since container handling was introduced in 2019.

Chief executive officer Datuk Azman Shah Mohd Yusof said the achievements were a result of the group’s transformation initiatives including digitisation, infrastructure expansion and employee-dedication.

“As we celebrate these achievements, we remain committed to building ports that are competitive, sustainable and future-ready,” he said.

As part of its transformation process, all the ports within the group also saw capacity building efforts.

For instance, PTP’s development of Berth Zero will support future capacity growth alongside its 11 new ultra-large container vessel cranes and 41 new electric rubber-tyred gantry cranes.

At the Johor Port, two liquid jetties to accommodate vessels have been commissioned, the statement added.
