PETALING JAYA: Finnish electronics manufacturer Scanfil has invested RM15.8mil to expand and modernise its SRX Global (M) Sdn Bhd plant, increasing production capacity by nearly 50%.
The upgrade strengthened the company’s Asia-Pacific operations, which also include facilities in Melbourne, Australia.
Prior to the expansion, the Johor Baru site operated four automated surface-mount technology lines with a workforce of 170.
The opening ceremony was officiated by Finland’s deputy head of mission to Malaysia Maiju Lepomaki and attended by Scanfil executives, including group chief executive (CEO) Christophe Sut and Asia Pacific vice-president Christian Kesten.
Also present were former SRX CEO Paul Appleby, representatives from the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida), and members of the Malaysian-Finnish Chamber of Commerce.
Mida CEO Datuk Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim said the expansion would help advance Malaysia’s ambitions to strengthen its high-value manufacturing sector.
“This investment will attract advanced technologies, create skilled employment opportunities, and strengthen innovation and sustainability across the electronics supply chain,” he said.
He pointed out that the move aligned with the country’s New Industrial Master Plan 2030 and National Semiconductor Strategy – both of which were aimed at deepening electronics and semiconductor capabilities while bolstering global supply chain resilience.
The modernised Johor Baru facility will feature a larger production area, integrated assembly and box-build capabilities, and advanced automation under Scanfil’s “dream factory” programme, which focuses on data integration and process optimisation.
The expansion also paved the way for future workforce growth beyond the current workforce.
According to Sut, the company foresees long-term growth opportunities in Johor Baru, driven by demand from industrial, medical technology and life sciences customers.
The move underlined Johor Baru’s role as a strategic electronics hub in Asia, with Scanfil positioning the facility as a key site in its global manufacturing network.
