PETALING JAYA: Gamuda Bhd has entered into a collaboration with Gentari Sdn Bhd to develop 1.5GW of renewable energy (RE) capacity through solar photovoltaic power plants paired with battery energy storage systems.

The new capacity, to be established under the national corporate renewable energy supply scheme, is expected to meet the energy demands of strategic hyperscale data centre players.

The partnership between Gamuda and Gentari, through their respective subsidiaries Gamuda Energy Sdn Bhd and Gentari Renewables Sdn Bhd, will merge Gentari’s expertise in large-scale RE development and operations with Gamuda’s track record in engineering, construction and delivery of complex infrastructure projects, including RE.

In a joint press statement yesterday, the two groups said the complementary strengths would help advance Malaysia’s RE transition while reinforcing the nation’s role as a regional digital economy hub.

Gamuda and Gentari had pledged to tackle the urgent need for RE from hyperscale date centres which are critical facilities for cloud computing, artificial intelligence and digital services.

Such facilities are expected to require more than 5GW of reliable power by 2035.

Gamuda Energy director Joshua Kong Sing Hoe said the availability of clean energy is a critical factor for attracting foreign direct investments as well as retaining investments from the world’s leading technology companies in Malaysia.

“We can support our data centre partners with a dedicated, sustainable and scalable pipeline of RE to ensure these crucial data centre facilities can operate at a reduced carbon footprint,” he said.

He added that the partnership had set the model for future collaborations aimed at powering sustainable development across various industries in supporting the national net-zero ambition.

Gentari chief renewables officer Low Kian Min said expanding RE capacity was not only critical for meeting this demand but also key to driving long-term growth.

“We are committed to working with partners like Gamuda to deliver practical, scalable clean energy projects that advance the nation’s net-zero ambitions and contribute to the global energy transition,” he added.

Meanwhile, Gamuda 30%-owned associate company, Naim Gamuda (Naga) JV Sdn Bhd (Naga), has secured a RM1.13bil contract from the Regional Corridor Development Authority for the development of the Northern Coastal Highway in Sarawak.

In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, Gamuda noted it would hold a 30% stake in Naga while Naim Engineering Sdn Bhd 70%.

The contract, for the Limbang Work Package Section 1, covers the construction of about 14.7km of four-lane dual carriageway in Limbang, including bridges, a flyover, earthworks and related works.
