Gig platforms laud government for roundtable on future of gig economy


KUALA LUMPUR: A group of gig economy platforms has expressed appreciation to government leaders for hosting a roundtable discussion focused on the future of gig work in Malaysia.

In a joint statement, Bolt, FastGig, foodpanda, GoGet, Grab, Halo Delivery, Kiddocare, Lalamove, and ShopeeFood thanked Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and other key officials for convening the July 1 roundtable at Tenera Bangi Resort.

Among the officials were the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, Deputy Human Resources Minister Abdul Rahman Mohamad, MDEC non-executive chairman Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh, and CEO Anuar Fariz Fadzil.,

“This timely engagement was an important step forward in building a collaborative approach in shaping Malaysia’s gig economy.

“We deeply value the government’s openness to industry perspectives as we explore the best way to balance protections for gig workers while preserving the flexibility, innovation and growth that defines this sector,” the companies said.

“As platforms that are collectively supporting tens of thousands of gig workers in Malaysia, we believe that productive engagement – grounded in mutual respect and a shared commitment to progress – can help Malaysia lead by example in crafting modern policies for the digital age.”
