NEW YORK: Forecasters expect a monthly report on US consumer prices to show a fifth month of firm increases, bolstering the case for an extended pause in US Federal Reserve interest-rate cuts.

The so-called core consumer price index (CPI), which excludes food and energy, is seen rising 0.3% in December alongside a 0.4% advance in the overall index, according to the median estimates in a Bloomberg survey.
