Bursa Malaysia bucks regional markets


KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia saw a follow-through in selling pressure which took the benchmark index lower amid a generally weak broader market.

The FBM KLCI finished down 1.13 points, or 0.07% at 1,618.27 after hitting an intraday high of 1,622.40.

There were 682 losers against 529 gainers while 487 counters were unchanged. About 5.64 billion shares, valued at RM3.92bil, changed hands.

Dealers said the overall sentiment appeared weak and selling pressure may follow recent gains.

At Bursa Malaysia, top loser was Nestle which fell 60 sen to RM127.40, HeiTech Padu, which lost 50 sen to RM1.92, Heineken, which declined 26 sen to RM24.30 and Malaysia Smelting Corp, which gave up 25 sen to RM2.95.

Among the gainers, Dutch Lady jumped 76 sen to RM33.76, Chin Hin rose 24 sen to RM3.44, Kluang added 22 sen to RM6.48 and Hong Leong Industries climbed 20 sen to RM12.

Meanwhile, the ringgit strengthened 0.23% against the US dollar at 4.7005. The local unit fell 0.06% to 5.9915 against the pound sterling and flat against the Euro at 5.1022. It gained 0.17% to the Singapore dollar at 3.4830.

Elsewhere in the region, Japan’s Nikkei 225 rose 0.66%, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index added 1.17%, South Korea’s Kospi closed up 1.32% and China’s CSI 300 Index gained 0.95%.
