Bank Negara highlights error in Google exchange rate data

KUALA LUMPUR: Bank Negara has addressed an error in the exchange rate for the ringgit against the US dollar published by Google on Feb 5, 2024.

The central bank said in a statement the exchange rate for the US$/RM was misreported on Google as 6.24.

A check on the search engine showed the exchange rate spiking to 6.2390 at 8am Malaysian time on Feb 5 before returning to 4.7503 a half hour later.

However, the high and low trading range for US$/RM recorded in the onshore interbank market for ringgit was between 4.7480 and 4.7630 on Feb 5, as published on the Bank Negara website.

"Members of the public are advised to exercise caution against using unverifiable sources as a reference for the ringgit," Bank Negara cautioned.
