SMG appoints chartered accountant Christina Foo as independent director


Christina FooChristina FooPETALING JAYA: Chartered accountant Christina Foo has been appointed as the independent non-executive director of Star Media Group Bhd effective Oct 1.

The 61-year-old Foo, who holds a bachelor’s degree in business studies from Deakin University, Australia, was also appointed as a member of the board’s audit committee.

With over three decades of experience in accounting, tax, finance, and strategic business advisory, Foo has taken up numerous boardroom appointments in the past.

Currently, she sits on the board of the Main Market-listed UEM Sunrise Bhd as the senior independent non-executive director.

She also sits on the board of Malaysian Technology Development Corp (MTDC). It is noteworthy that she has been serving on MTDC’s board of directors for over a decade.

At Sunway University, Foo chairs the Industry Advisory Board of Sunway University Business School from 2020. From 2018 to 2019, she had also served as a senior practice fellow of Sunway Business School.

In addition, she also chairs the Liaison Committee of The Mines Resort and Golf Club.

Previously, from March 2018 to June 2021, Foo had served as a board member of the Main Market-listed KPJ Healthcare Bhd.

Following her appointment as SMG’s independent director, Foo will bring in a wide-ranging leadership and corporate experience to further strengthen SMG’s board of directors.

From 1985 till 2001, Foo had served Ernst & Young (EY) Malaysia, EY LLP based in Atlanta, EY International in London and EY Asia Pacific Consulting.

Her last position in EY Malaysia was director of business development.

In 2001, she co-founded Priority One Consultancy Services Sdn Bhd and later Priority One Tax Services Sdn Bhd. She was a director of both firms until August 2022.

With regard to her professional qualifications, Foo is a fellow of CPA Australia, a fellow of Malaysian Institute of Management and a fellow of the Institute of Corporate Directors Malaysia.

She is a member of Asean Chartered Professional Accountant and Malaysian Institute of Corporate Governance.

She is also a qualified risk director of Institute of Enterprise Risk Practitioners.
